Tairrie B Interview on New My Ruin Live AlbumMy Ruin Vocalist Tairrie B on My Ruin's Alive On The Other Side
In this interview with Tairrie B, the vocalist with LA metallers My Ruin talks about the release of their first true live album and DVD, Alive On The Other Side.
Suite 101: The new My Ruin album, Alive On The Other Side, is out this month... Tairrie: “Yeah, that’s out September 22nd and we have a UK tour that we’re coming back on in October – the ReligiosiTour. The live album was recorded really by mistake. We were on a tour in January in support of Throat Full Of Heart and we played at Rio’s in Leeds and we decided to tape the show that night. It turned out to be an incredible show and we later listened to it and we were like: ‘Holy **** – this is our live album!’ We’ve always wanted to do it. Years ago we released To Britain With Love…And Bruises which was a limited edition video live album but it wasn’t an actual live album per se. It was actually live in the studio. It was a cool album and it was kind of our little gift to the UK – it was more a thank you and a love letter and this is our live record. It’s so great to have songs like Beauty Fiend that we’ve changed and now play completely different than we did in 2000 - we have medleys on there of a few of our old songs together like Made To Measure, Get Pretty and Beauty Fiend off various records and it’s really neat to do all that and have something to kinda show who we are now. Another really cool thing is Marcelo Palomino who was with me in Tura Satana and Manhole as drummer and he came out on that tour and we did a Manhole song, Hypocrite, so that’s on the record and doing that with Marcelo in 2008, that was really cool.” My Ruin Alive On The Other Side Live Album and DVDSuite 101: And the DVD part...? Tairrie: “There’s also a two hour DVD. We filmed ourselves as a sort of documentary on the road from show to show and the DVD goes through all the dates day by day. There’s kids on it, there’s interviews, it was my birthday party while we were out, there’s the last night tour party, there’s photo shoots...” On Car Crashes and Throat Full Of HeartSuite 101: On Throat Full Of Heart there was a mini-documentary showing the aftermath of your accident (prior to recording the accident, Tairrie was involved in a car crash in which she nearly lost her left arm). Is that still painful to watch? Tairrie: “Yeah, there’s like a making of the album DVD with a mini-movie that shows pictures and it shows some of my doctors visits and lets people know my recovery process. They can see me getting my stitches out and all that kind of stuff that was kind of gruesome but, you know, it was part of making that record and I thought it was very important. That’s on there but I think the great thing about the new record is it’s my first tour after the accident and it was very emotional. It was just ****ing amazing, you know. Britain’s been amazing to my band, it’s been amazing to me over the years and I’m really proud that I can still be doing this after so many years. We’re not a big band – we are who we are and the fact that people are still interested in talking to the band and buying our records – I’m very blessed.” The My Ruin Live ExperienceSuite 101: How would you describe the My Ruin live experience? Tairrie: “I think our band is a good old-fashioned rock band. We’re not wearing costumes and masks – we’re not some sort of a ****ing clown act. We’re up there just rockin’ and I think at the end of the day you’ve got to be able to rock no matter what you’re wearing, no matter what you’re doing. You’ve got to be able to bring it.” Click here for more from Tairrie on spoken word project The LVRS or here for an interview on Manhole and Tura Satana.
