21 & Under With…Pride Tiger

An open pit Bar-B-Q at the Cobalt, finds us throwing pieces of Pride Tiger (yes fur and all) on the grill, for a tasty Rock N’ Roll feast and yes we are eating with our hands.

An endangered species found on the borders; between Commercial Dr. and the Notorious D.T.E.S (Google if you

must) we talk with Matt & Bob

from Pride Tiger and find out that when 3 Inches of Blood spill on the S.T.R.E.E.T.S., these bad

cats have claimed their territory.

E.S. Day: You’ve recently signed to EMI , is this just a Canadian deal or worldwide?

Matt: Just Canada for now.

E.S. Day: How much pride can one tiger have and what’s the myth behind the moniker?

Matt: Well, Tiger’s are real proud (laughs)the second question, we came up with name based

on the Dio song “Holy Diver” there’s a line in it that says “Ride The Tiger” and I think it was our

bass player who ran with it.

E.S. Day: Ok, tell me the first thing that comes to mind

E.S. Day: Black Crowes, Blackfoot, Black Oak Arkansas

Bob: Black Oak Arkansas

E.S. Day: Alabama Thunderpussy or Nashville Pussy?

Matt: Nashville Pussy

E.S. Day:Wet Willie or Willie Pickton?

Matt & Bob: (Laughs) Oh my god! Ah…Wet Willie I guess.

E.S. Day: Henry Rollins or Rossington – Collins?

Matt: (laughs) Oh mygod, that’s so good!, Umm..it’s a tie.

E.S. Day: Jack Daniels or Charlie Daniels?

Bob: JD Man!

E.S. Day: Do Pride Tigers eat their young?

Bob: No, we’re the ones getting eaten.

E.S. Day: How do feel about music critics illegally downloading your music in order to review it?

Matt: It doesn't bother us.

E.S. Day: Once again the next act to bail out of Vancouver via a major label, is your sound affected by your surroundings

Matt : Oh man, I don’t think we sound like too many of the bands around here.

Bob: I think even if we talk some B.S., we’re proud to be from Vancouver, I think it’s the best town in Canada.

E.S. Day: Am I the first journalist to get in the "Tiger Jokes"?

Bob: No, but you ask the best ones!

E.S. Day: Scenario: Your label demands that you pick and record a cover version of any artist you want. Who’s the group/artist and what song?

Bob: Cool

Matt: It would probably be obvious to do a Thin Lizzy song

E.S. Day: Anything from “Thunder & Lightning” maybe?

Matt: Yeah “Sun Goes Down”

E.S. Day: Oh yeah, I have an English Professor friend named Bill Roberts (we call him “Moose”)who would love to hear to that [young bands appreciating the “Old School”].

Matt: Right on Moose!

E.S. Day: What’s your fave album so far this year?

Bob: Ummm…I dug like Comets on Fire on Sub-Pop, but no, not a lot of new stuff that I’m

digging.

E.S. Day: No there’s not is there?

Matt: No, we just listen to a lot of old stuff

E.S. Day: Molly Ringwald or Molly Hatchet?

Matt: Molly Haaa.. no Molly Ringwald (laughs)

Matt & Bob: (laughs)

E.S. Day:”When I went through my parents’ record collection I would pick & play..."

Matt: CCR

Bob: Elvis

E.S. Day: Ok, thank you. Next.

E.S. Day: What Can Brown Do For You?

Matt: (laughs)Ah…you're stumping me . I used to wash trucks for UPS so….

E.S. Day: Who is Pride Tiger listening to, that we are not and should know about (locally)

Bob: Uh I would say... Bison.

E.S. Day: Bison?

Bob : yeah, we played with them at…

E.S. Day: Let me guess – The Buffalo Club!

(Laughs)

Bob : Yeah they’ll be playing with us tonight.

E.S. Day: Goatwhore, Goats Milk or Goatsblood?

Bob : Goatsblood (the band)

E.S. Day: Speaking of blood tell our readers about the 3 Inches Of Blood connection and is this really just 3 Inches of Blood with Mike from The S.T.R.E.E.T.S.?

Matt: That’s a really good question.

Bob: Sunny and myself started 3 Inches of Blood in like ,the late 90’s up north, with Jamie Hooper – he’s the screamer In 3 Inches of Blood We moved to Vancouver, got signed and all that stuff. Then a turn of events – we got Matt in the band playing drums, it was sort of like, we had Pride Tiger going before Matt was in the band but it never felt right [Matt being in 3 Inches] so we were like “We gotta do this band”

We were all listening to more older 70’s rock and we all kinda quit at different times and once every one was out of that band, we really just went hard at this stuff. Now good things have happened for us.

So, I think we keep a few similarities, but not really a lot. I think you can tell from the guitars that it’s still Sunny and myself.

E.S. Day: Who produced this album again?

Bob: Matt Hyde (Slayer, Monster Magnet, No Doubt, Fu Manchu) He’s a genius.

Thanks Guys it’s been a slice.
